A childhood friend and romantic interest. However, the Argon is happening in New York, and this time the game is deadlier than ever. A few days before the Argon is set to begin, Lore stays in New York City. It’s a deadly game in which Lore is now not apart of since a rival bloodline murdered her family. The Gods are hunted by strong bloodlines seeking to kill them and gain their immortal power. Nine Greek gods are forced to walk the earth as mortals with powers. She is a strong-willed girl who escaped the brutal world of her bloodline. BUT before I get ahead of myself and tell you my thoughts about my first Alexandra Bracken book, let’s talk Lore. Lore is the first book I have read by Alexandra Bracken. I first saw this book on Instagram, and the cover grabbed my attention. Review: Lore by Alexandra Bracken is here, and I am so excited to talk about Lore. Comstock made it his personal mission to take down Madame Restell, and he was successful. This was eventually widened to make it illegal to directly provide, discuss, or hand out information on birth control. The incredibly broad and subjective Comstock Law was quickly used to prohibit the mailing out of any birth control, marriage manuals, anatomy textbooks, or information about abortion. Postal Inspector, and founder of the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice, Comstock lobbied Congress to make it illegal to distribute “obscene, lewd, and lascivious” material through the U.S. And she was popular enough to afford to live in a Fifth Avenue mansion.Įnter Anthony Comstock. She performed surgical abortions, and also opened up a boarding house where clients with unwanted pregnancies could give birth in anonymity. She offered up preventative powders, female monthly pills, and other abortifacients. Madame Restell, a “female physician,” was the premier abortionist in NYC. Until the middle of the 19th century, abortion was legal and viewed as a private medical procedure. The Gilded Age saw an unprecedented reversal of women’s reproductive rights. Joanna Shupe vividly evokes 1890s New York, from glamorous restaurants to a Bowery boxing hall to the original Madison Square Garden. On top of this, Cuddy’s style is approachable to those who have never read scientific studies, which is impressive given the number of studies she cites. Her vulnerable honesty left her feeling like an actual friend, even though I’ve never interacted with her. One of the first things I noticed in reading this book is how connected I felt to Cuddy from the first sentence. Thus, this book is filled with much more research and explanations than a 20-minute talk could hold, but I still read it in two days. In reading this book, I am caught by her humility and genuine desire to just help people. While I was at first skeptical of the content of her talk, her story of physical mental trauma as the result of a car accident combined with research and helpful anecdotes won me over to the idea of the body informing our self-belief.Īfter the success of her talk, Cuddy wrote Presence to more deeply share this knowledge with those who need it. It’s clear that this installment is just a setup volume, and the plot to take Midnight down will span many characters and pages to come. With this series, the author takes inspiration from the mythology of ancient Mexico, basing names and spellings on Mayan and Aztec words. Vance makes for a naïve, rather hyperconscious narrator, continually speculating as to who may be telling the truth and what their motives may be. At last, other groups become involved in an effort to destroy Jeshickah and the seemingly all-powerful, oppressive empire of Midnight. When he learns that he has some sort of magic, he faces more decisions, especially since a mysterious disease has begun to ravage both human slaves and vampire masters. With Armada, Cline finally has the opportunity to address the question of whether his work has legs beyond the crutch of his referential obsessions. Armada is the highly anticipated second novel from Ernest Cline, who hit the best-seller list in 2011 with his debut, Ready Player One. The sins of Cline’s era-specific obsessions and wafer-thin characters were forgivable, given the effervescent pleasures of his geek-culture mashup. We’re told that he’s just immersing himself in the beloved media of his dead father, but hearing a modern-day teenage character talk about ’80s culture with the intimacy and nostalgia of his 43-year-old creator feels more than a little contrived.Īnd familiar: Ready Player One, the novel that launched Cline’s career, was a sci-fi adventure about teenagers cavorting through a futuristic virtual reality world where the limitless creative possibilities of the digital universe were oddly laser-focused on 1980s pop culture references. Armada is at once a rollicking, surprising thriller, a classic coming of age adventure. Armada reads like a coming-of-age fantasy for people who came of age long ago despite the fact that Zack Lightman is only 18 years old, he drives a 1989 Dodge Omni, watches ’80s movies like Say Anything, and can’t stop listening to ZZ Top. Armada: From the author of READY PLAYER ONE.
